South Eastern Automobile Club – Autocross Round 4
Despite considerable rain falling during the week leading up to the event & flooding several sections of the course, the South Eastern Automobile Club held a very successful 4th Round of the Autocross Series at SEAC Park at Compton. A tight & twisty course was set by the Director, Peter Becker, to challenge the skill of the competitors in the slippery conditions.
A modest field of 17 entries of various types of vehicles made for some entertaining racing that eventually saw Aaron Bowering in his Datsun 200B take out the winning honours for the day. Bowering, together with navigator Nathan Lowe, had competed in the Victorian Clubman Rally Series at Avoca the night before where they finished a very creditable 3rd outright in a field of 45 cars, then travelled back to Mount Gambier through the early hours of the morning to arrive in time for the Autocross event where he continued his winning way by being fastest in every one of the 8 heats on the day.
Second place went to Peter Rogers in his pristine Datsun 1600 in a return to form, narrowly ahead of the ever improving Nissan Pulsar driven by Matt Pritchard.
The Wilson brothers had a mixed day of issues with Damien in his Datsun 180B, narrowly ahead of Phil in a Falcon, both having early mechanical problems in their respective cars due to the wet conditions.
Next home went to the Junior driver of Darren Harris, getting quicker as he comes to terms with his new Datsun 1600, followed by much improved new comer Bruce Davis in his angry black Commodore. Next were the regulars of Jason Argent also in a Commodore & Terry Masters in the entertaining Valiant, narrowly from first year driver David Hart in another Commodore.
Struggling in the slippery conditions, Craig Boult in his Valiant was next , closely followed by Steve Harris in a Datsun 1600, then Jeremy Van Den Hoogen in his Commodore, & Mark Payne racing for the first time in a Holden Apollo.
Scott Kurzman had a day he’d rather forget with numerous mechanical issues with his Commodore & failed to finish.
The next round of the Series is set for August 14th where the current points leader, Aaron Bowering will have several challengers seeking top spot on the ladder.
